Supporting young journeys through gymnastics

At Catleaps Gymnastics, every child’s journey matters. Coaches create an environment where progress is personal, and confidence grows naturally. Through initiatives like the Young Leaders programme, children discover their voice, take on responsibility, and leave the gym feeling proud of who they’re becoming.

Club Case Study: Catleaps Gymnastics Club

At Catleaps Gymnastics in Dagenham, every child’s journey matters. For Director of Coaching and founder Cat Bates, the club has always been about more than learning routines or collecting medals. It’s about using gymnastics to help young people grow, build confidence and discover their own path.

That belief runs through the entire coaching team. Head Coach David and coach Ali both make the Journey pillar of child-first coaching central to everything they do. In their sessions, progress is not measured by scores or placements but by how each child develops as a person.

David often talks about how gymnastics offers children much more than physical ability. It teaches perseverance, listening and teamwork. Every child moves at their own pace, and for the coaches at Catleaps, that individuality is something to be celebrated.

The club recognises that no two journeys look the same. Some children come to improve their technique, others to make friends, and some to find a space where they feel they belong. Ali focuses on understanding those personal motivations so he can adapt sessions around what matters most to each gymnast. By helping children set and achieve their own goals, Ali ensures every session feels relevant and rewarding.

One of the clearest examples of this approach is the Young Leaders programme. It gives gymnasts the chance to take on small leadership roles, guiding younger members and helping to run parts of a session. Supported by the coaching team, the young leaders learn to plan, communicate and problem-solve while developing confidence in their abilities.

For many, the programme becomes a turning point. They start to see gymnastics not just as something they take part in but as something they can shape. Taking on these responsibilities helps them grow in confidence and encourages them to think about the kind of role models they want to be for others.

Parents notice this change too. Children who once stood quietly at the edge of the mat now take the lead in warm-ups, offer encouragement to others and leave the gym with a stronger sense of pride.

Through Cat’s vision and the dedication of coaches like David and Ali, Catleaps has created an environment where effort, kindness and persistence are valued as much as skill. The club’s focus on journey means that every child, whatever their goal, is supported to find their own way forward.

As the Play Their Way film with Catleaps Gymnastics shows, when coaches focus on the journey rather than the destination, sport becomes more than competition. It becomes a space where young people learn about themselves, build confidence and grow together.
