At Volume 1 Climbing in West Sussex, coach Abi Hofmann focuses on more than just climbing skills she prioritises creating a supportive, inclusive environment for children. Their sessions are shaped by the Play Their Way principles of voice, choice, and journey, encouraging kids to express themselves, make decisions, and take ownership of their progress.

Climbing is often seen as a test of strength and skill, but at Volume 1 Climbing in West Sussex the focus goes far deeper. Coach Abi Hofmann believes that what matters most isn’t just reaching the top of the wall, but creating an environment where young people are heard, trusted and supported to take ownership of their journey.

Volume 1 runs climbing sessions for children aged 4 to 16. These groups are designed to be inclusive, welcoming young people who may not have found their place in more traditional team sports. In climbing, there’s space for every personality and ability. Some enjoy problem-solving, some love the social side, others simply find joy in moving across the wall. Whatever their motivation, Abi's aim is to nurture all their journeys.

The Play Their Way pillars of voice, choice and journey shape every session. Choice is encouraged from the start. Instead of running through the same drills each week, Abi invites the children to suggest activities, design challenges and play with new ideas. It might be inventing a game, trying out different routes, or setting personal goals. This freedom helps the children feel that the sessions belong to them, not just the coaches.

Voice is equally important. The young climbers are asked what they think, how they feel and what they want to try next. In a sport where safety is a priority, it would be easy to default to strict instruction. But Abi shows that listening doesn’t weaken structure, it strengthens trust. When children feel heard, they take more responsibility, they engage more deeply, and they build confidence that carries beyond the climbing wall.

Instead of prescribing activities, Abi often hands the pen to the children. On the whiteboard at the start of a session, she asks them what they’d like to try that day. Climbing games, challenges, all ideas are welcomed. The board quickly fills with scribbles and suggestions, and then together they shape the plan. It’s a small moment, but it tells the children their voices matter — and it gives them ownership of the session before they’ve even touched the wall.

Then there’s the journey. Climbing is never straightforward. Some weeks a move feels impossible, then suddenly it clicks. Setbacks are common, but Abi frames these moments as part of the process. Success isn’t measured by how quickly a child gets to the top, but by how they persevere, how they support each other, and how they grow over time. It’s a lesson in resilience that goes well beyond sport.

Parents notice the difference. Children who arrive hesitant or unsure often leave buzzing with energy, proud of the choices they’ve made and the challenges they’ve faced. Many discover a love for physical activity that might have passed them by elsewhere.

For Abi, the real reward is seeing children flourish when given space to lead. By putting voice, choice and journey at the heart of their coaching, they’re showing that climbing is more than a sport. It’s a way of helping young people build confidence, creativity and community.

When coaches embrace child-first principles, the impact is lasting. The children don’t just learn how to climb walls. They learn how to overcome them.
