We’re Mind, the mental health charity. We provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem across England and Wales. We campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

Over 110 local Minds support people in communities through a range of services, which include supported housing, crisis helplines, drop-in centres, employment and training schemes, counselling and befriending. Our physical activity team use the power of sport and physical activity to raise awareness, tackle mental health stigma, and support those of us with mental health problems to become more active.

Why are you involved with Play Their Way?

We are fighting for the mental health of young people and coaches so that physical activity can be used to build resilience, support and enable mental health recovery, and tackle stigma.

We believe that for young people to thrive they need to be listened to and genuinely heard. We also need young people to be put at the centre of a service, so that it’s designed and tailored around them. This ensures their feelings, ambitions and motivations are at the heart of what’s delivered (sometimes called a person-centred approach).

We also provide resources and training, as well as supporting people that work and volunteer in the sport and physical activity sector to better understand mental health. Find out more here. Our resources to better support Young People's mental health through activity is available here

Physical activity can play a key role in helping us to stay well and manage mental health problems. Studies suggest that regular physical activity can even reduce the risk of depression by up to 30%. It is essential that children and young people are welcomed into coaching environments where they can be themselves and they can thrive."
