The NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) is part of the NSPCC and is funded by UK sports councils. Our aim is to help improve safeguarding and child protection practices within sport organisations, to ensure all children and young people are safe while taking part in sport.

The CPSU was founded in 2001 in response to a series of high-profile cases of abuse of young athletes. We assist sport organisations to develop and embed safeguarding policies and procedures, creating a safe and inclusive environment for all participants, staff and volunteers.

We do this by:

  • Supporting organisations to follow our set standards for safeguarding children in sport
  • Commissioning and supporting research into a range of issues, developing understanding and an evidence base for work
  • Providing expert safeguarding and child protection advice to National Governing Bodies, Active Partnerships, clubs, coaches and parents
  • Guiding organisations through a framework process to ensure standards are embedded across their work
  • Developing and delivering sport specific training, resources and guidance

Why are you involved with Play Their Way?

The NSPCC CPSU supports the CCC’s approach to every child’s right to enjoy participating in sport in a safe and fun environment. Together with the CCC, the CPSU recognises the importance of taking a child-focussed approach to safeguarding. Through our work, we aim to empower organisations to take a child-focussed approach to safeguarding. We share the CCC’s approach to children’s rights and continue to support the CCC movement.

Supporting the CCC movement is important to us at the CPSU, as we share the CCC vision of maintaining the voice of the child at the heart of all sport and physical activity. From design and development, through to delivery, children must feel listened to, valued and respected. Creating listening cultures will support and enhance positive and safe experiences for children and young people in sport and physical activity."
