Salisbury Rovers FC (SRFC) is an award-winning youth football club for children and young people aged from 5 to 18. We are proud to do things differently.

Respect for children's rights lies at the heart of our club and underpins all our operations. This means we seek and act upon the views of young people and we ensure that the right of all children to play is respected. We believe the game belongs to the kids who play it, and the sporting journey is theirs not ours. Our younger children don’t play in leagues. Our coaches don’t direct play. We put in place high standards to protect children’s right to play freely. We think long-term and include everyone.

At SRFC, we are attempting to create a different form of club. When parents take their first steps to ‘sign up’, they are encouraged to commit to voluntary activity and to contribute to the community, rather than viewing the club as a commercial service to be paid for. Children experience membership through a range of democratic devices, and are empowered to lead, to take decisions and take responsibility. SRFC is therefore not a transactional setting, we are a community, and our members are encouraged to play a part in all our activities.

Why are you involved with Play Their Way?

Youth sport desperately needs to change. Too often, despite talk of ‘person before player’, children and young people are never asked for their views and their interests are overlooked in an increasingly adult focussed sporting world of adult targets and outcomes. We have forgotten the importance and value to childhood development of play. The CCC has committed to a vision of child first coaching underpinned by respect for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We believe this is a once in a generation opportunity to change sport for the better for all children by embedding respect for human rights in youth sport, and by connecting coaches who share this vision. We look forward to working together to challenge orthodoxies which fail children and young people. evaluation.

Youth football belongs to the kids who play it, but the game has lost its way. Trialling, selection, cost, adult priorities and anxieties all devalue the essence and freedom of the game and undermine the right of children to play it the way they want. We believe that the CCC should advance a vision of youth sport as a place where everyone can come together, and no one is left behind.

Our vision for the CCC is that we will advocate and campaign for a sporting experience for all which is led by the children and young people who play their sport. Their voices should lead the experience, and they should be able to share their views and be fere to follow their own path, feeling safe, happy and in control of their own journey.

Our hope is that the CCC will connect coaches who feel passionately about this and can work together to promote shared values to change cultures which do not prioritise children’s voices or experiences."
